How each puzzle is checked

Every puzzle in these books was made by a program and then checked by the same program: it is kept only when the solver finds exactly one filling and reaches it by reasoning, never by trying a number to see what happens.

The picture beside every book is a real page out of it, the first page of puzzles, exactly as it prints. The sample is a five puzzle PDF taken from four difficulty levels, so you can see what the hard end looks like before you pay.

All ten kinds are also free to play once a day at arling.sk/games, with hints that explain themselves. The books hold different puzzles from the daily ones, so nothing in them is a repeat.

Hard to see, not hard to guess.

A puzzle book can say unique solution and mean only that somebody checked the answer once. We mean something narrower. Each puzzle is built by a program that also solves it. The solver is asked to find two solutions; the puzzle is kept only if it finds exactly one, and only if it reached that one by applying rules, never by putting in a number to see whether the grid falls apart later.

That is why the hard puzzles here are long rather than lucky. It also means the answer at the back is the answer, not one of several that happen to fit.

Two more things the program checks before a book is printed: no two puzzles in a book are the same, and no two have the same answer either. Difficulty rises through the book, from a small easy grid to the full sized challenge ones at the end, so the twenty fifth puzzle is harder than the first without a jump in the middle.

Everything is drawn as vector line work, not as pictures of screens: the lines stay sharp at any print size, the numbers are set in a plain sans face, and there is no grey that a home printer has to guess at.

What exactly do I get, and in which formats?

Two PDF files for each book you buy: one laid out for A4 and one for US Letter. The puzzles are the same in both, only the page size differs, so you print whichever suits your paper. Both are black and white, with the fonts embedded, between 78 and 120 pages depending on the book, and between 0.4 and 4 MB. There is no DRM and no account: the files are yours to keep.

How do I print it?

On any home or office printer, in black and white. Choose the file that matches your paper, print at 100 percent or actual size rather than fit to page, and the grids come out at the size they were drawn. You can print a few pages at a time, print one page twice if you spoil it, or have a copy shop run the whole book. The solutions are all at the back, so you can leave them in the drawer.

Which ten kinds of puzzle are these?

Slitherlink (Otters), Nonograms (Magpies), Kakuro (Squirrels), Hashi or Bridges (Cranes), Masyu (Swans), Nurikabe (Voles), Killer Sudoku (Badgers), Numberlink (Herons), Anti-knight Sudoku (Hares) and Star Battle (Hedgehogs). Each book holds one kind and nothing else. The rules are printed in the front of every book with one worked example, and you can also read them and play a puzzle a day free at arling.sk/games.

How do you know every puzzle has exactly one solution?

Because a program checked all one thousand of them. The solver is run with a limit of two solutions; if it finds a second one, the puzzle is thrown away and another is generated. It also has to reach the solution by rules alone, without trial and error. On top of that the program re-derives every clue from the printed answer and compares it with the printed puzzle, so a drawing mistake cannot slip in either.

How do I get the PDF after paying?

Stripe sends you back to this page and the download links appear on the book you bought, right here, within a few seconds. Nothing is e-mailed and there is no account to make.

How that works. The download links come from our licence service: after the payment it checks with Stripe that the order is paid and which book it was for, and only then gives this page links signed for your purchase. Each link works for 7 days, and the page asks for fresh ones every time you open it in the browser you paid in. The script of this page holds no address of any book file.

Do I get a receipt or an invoice?

Yes. Link e-mails you the receipt as soon as the payment goes through. The seller (merchant of record) is Link (Sold through Link, LLC) through the Stripe Managed Payments service; ARLing s. r. o. supplies the product. At checkout you will see “Sold through Link” and your bank statement will show LINK.COM* ARLING. The checkout has no field for a company VAT number; the receipt uses the name and address entered at checkout.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. As a consumer you can withdraw within 14 days without giving a reason, as our terms say in section 5: write to support@arling.sk or use the withdrawal form, and we refund you within 14 days by the same payment method. If a file is broken or a puzzle is wrong, write to us and we put it right.

That is the law, not our customer service. The five puzzle sample is free and comes from four difficulty levels precisely so you can decide before paying. And if a file is broken, a puzzle is wrong, or you bought the same book twice, write to support@arling.sk and we will fix it or send the money back, because that is a different thing from changing your mind.

I lost the unlock: new computer, cleared browser.

The unlock lives in this browser only, so clearing it or moving to another machine loses it. Write to support@arling.sk with the order number or the e-mail address from the Stripe payment and we will send you the links again. You pay nothing more.

Can I buy a book on Etsy instead?

Yes, each of the ten books is in our Etsy shop on its own, as the same two PDFs; the bundle of all ten is sold only here. Here the price is final, VAT included. On Etsy, buyers in the EU pay local VAT on top (23 percent in Slovakia), and elsewhere Etsy may add local tax. Etsy takes the payment and sends the receipt, and any refund goes through Etsy too. The files wait in Purchases and reviews on etsy.com, or behind the link in the Etsy receipt e-mail if you check out as a guest; open them in a web browser, as the Etsy app does not currently support downloading digital purchases. You can ask us through Etsy messages or at support@arling.sk. Etsy suits you if you already shop there; in the EU, buying here costs less.
