Every puzzle in these books was made by a program and then checked by the same program: it is kept only when the solver finds exactly one filling and reaches it by reasoning, never by trying a number to see what happens. One hundred puzzles a book, easy first and challenge last, all the solutions at the back. You get one PDF sized for A4 and one for US Letter, black and white, made to be printed.

The ten books
One kind of puzzle in each.
The picture beside every book is a real page out of it, the first page of puzzles, exactly as it prints. The sample is a five puzzle PDF taken from four difficulty levels, so you can see what the hard end looks like before you pay.
-
SlitherlinkOtters
Draw one closed loop along the grid lines, where a number says how many of its four sides the loop runs along, and no number says nothing at all.
Unlocked. Download Otters, A4 PDF or Otters, US Letter PDF.
-
NonogramsMagpies
The numbers along the edges give the lengths of the runs of filled cells in order, and the picture falls out of the arithmetic without a single guess.
Unlocked. Download Magpies, A4 PDF or Magpies, US Letter PDF.
-
KakuroSquirrels
A crossword made of sums: every run of cells adds up to the number in its clue, using 1 to 9, with no digit repeated inside a run.
Unlocked. Download Squirrels, A4 PDF or Squirrels, US Letter PDF.
-
HashiCranes
Join the numbered sandbanks with straight walkways, as many as each number says, never crossing, until every sandbank can be reached from every other.
Unlocked. Download Cranes, A4 PDF or Cranes, US Letter PDF.
-
MasyuSwans
Draw one loop through every swan: straight through the white ones, turning on the black ones, and never through the same cell twice.
Unlocked. Download Swans, A4 PDF or Swans, US Letter PDF.
-
NurikabeVoles
Every number is an island of that many cells, and the rest of the meadow is one connected sheet of water that never fills a two by two block.
Unlocked. Download Voles, A4 PDF or Voles, US Letter PDF.
-
Killer SudokuBadgers
Sudoku with nothing filled in at the start: the dotted cages carry the sum of the cells inside them, and no number repeats within a cage.
Unlocked. Download Badgers, A4 PDF or Badgers, US Letter PDF.
-
NumberlinkHerons
Join each pair of matching nests with a path. Paths never cross, never run beside themselves, and every cell of the marsh ends up used.
Unlocked. Download Herons, A4 PDF or Herons, US Letter PDF.
-
Anti-knight SudokuHares
Ordinary Sudoku with one rule added: two cells a chess knight's leap apart never hold the same number, and in the harder ones neighbours never match either.
Unlocked. Download Hares, A4 PDF or Hares, US Letter PDF.
-
Star BattleHedgehogs
Two hedgehogs in every row, every column and every outlined flowerbed, and no two of them may touch, not even at a corner.
Unlocked. Download Hedgehogs, A4 PDF or Hedgehogs, US Letter PDF.
All ten kinds are also free to play once a day at arling.sk/games, with hints that explain themselves. The books hold different puzzles from the daily ones, so nothing in them is a repeat.
What one solution means here
Hard to see, not hard to guess.
A puzzle book can say unique solution and mean only that somebody checked the answer once. We mean something narrower. Each puzzle is built by a program that also solves it. The solver is asked to find two solutions; the puzzle is kept only if it finds exactly one, and only if it reached that one by applying rules, never by putting in a number to see whether the grid falls apart later.
That is why the hard puzzles here are long rather than lucky. It also means the answer at the back is the answer, not one of several that happen to fit.
Two more things the program checks before a book is printed: no two puzzles in a book are the same, and no two have the same answer either. Difficulty rises through the book, from a small easy grid to the full sized challenge ones at the end, so the twenty fifth puzzle is harder than the first without a jump in the middle.
Everything is drawn as vector line work, not as pictures of screens: the lines stay sharp at any print size, the numbers are set in a plain sans face, and there is no grey that a home printer has to guess at.
Questions
Before you pay.
What exactly do I get, and in which formats?
Two PDF files for each book you buy: one laid out for A4 and one for US Letter. The puzzles are the same in both, only the page size differs, so you print whichever suits your paper. Both are black and white, with the fonts embedded, between 78 and 120 pages depending on the book, and between 0.4 and 4 MB. There is no DRM and no account: the files are yours to keep.
How do I print it?
On any home or office printer, in black and white. Choose the file that matches your paper, print at 100 percent or actual size rather than fit to page, and the grids come out at the size they were drawn. You can print a few pages at a time, print one page twice if you spoil it, or have a copy shop run the whole book. The solutions are all at the back, so you can leave them in the drawer.
Which ten kinds of puzzle are these?
Slitherlink (Otters), Nonograms (Magpies), Kakuro (Squirrels), Hashi or Bridges (Cranes), Masyu (Swans), Nurikabe (Voles), Killer Sudoku (Badgers), Numberlink (Herons), Anti-knight Sudoku (Hares) and Star Battle (Hedgehogs). Each book holds one kind and nothing else. The rules are printed in the front of every book with one worked example, and you can also read them and play a puzzle a day free at arling.sk/games.
How do you know every puzzle has exactly one solution?
Because a program checked all one thousand of them. The solver is run with a limit of two solutions; if it finds a second one, the puzzle is thrown away and another is generated. It also has to reach the solution by rules alone, without trial and error. On top of that the program re-derives every clue from the printed answer and compares it with the printed puzzle, so a drawing mistake cannot slip in either.
How do I get the PDF after paying?
Stripe sends you back to this page and the download links appear on the book you bought, right here, within a few seconds. Nothing is e-mailed and there is no account to make.
An honest note about how that works. The PDFs sit on ordinary static hosting, and what protects them is only that their addresses carry sixteen random characters. Unlocking just shows you the address; it does not create it. Anyone who saves the link, or who reads the script of this page, can reach the file without paying. We chose that on purpose rather than run a server that would have to hold your data. If you would rather we did it some other way, write and say so.
Do I get a receipt or an invoice?
Yes. Stripe e-mails a receipt with VAT as soon as the payment goes through. Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd. is the merchant of record: you buy from Stripe, which issues the document and settles the VAT, and ARLing supplies the files. If you are buying for a company, enter your VAT number in the checkout and the document is made out to the company.
Can I get my money back?
By law, no, and we want to say that before you pay rather than after. Digital content delivered immediately with your consent carries no right of withdrawal: in Slovakia that is section 19 paragraph 1 letter m) of Act No. 108/2024 Coll. on consumer protection, and across the EU it is Article 16 letter m) of Directive 2011/83/EU. Clicking the payment button is that consent, because the download appears at once.
That is the law, not our customer service. The five puzzle sample is free and comes from four difficulty levels precisely so you can decide before paying. And if a file is broken, a puzzle is wrong, or you bought the same book twice, write to andrej@arling.sk and we will fix it or send the money back, because that is a different thing from changing your mind.
I lost the unlock: new computer, cleared browser.
The unlock lives in this browser only, so clearing it or moving to another machine loses it. Write to andrej@arling.sk with the order number or the e-mail address from the Stripe payment and we will send you the links again. You pay nothing more.
