Result
Score 0 to 100, reason for the match, list version, as CSV.

How the score is calculated.

Both names, yours and the one from the EU list, are prepared the same way: accents are unified (Müller, Mueller and Muller are the same), Cyrillic and Greek script is transliterated into Latin, legal forms such as Ltd, LLC, GmbH, AG, s.r.o., OOO or “Joint Stock Company” are removed, and common spelling variants are aligned (Iwanow and Ivanov). Word order does not matter.

The score is the highest value from three rules, and the result names the rule:

  • Name matches as a whole: how many words of both names correspond to each other.
  • Name from the EU list is fully contained in the partner name: for example a listed person’s name inside the name of a sole trader’s business. At most 90.
  • Partner name is fully contained in the name from the EU list: for example “Technopromexport Ltd” against a longer listed name. At most 90.

A word with at least 5 letters may differ by one letter, from 9 letters by two. Shorter words must match exactly. A single surname in a company name is not enough for a match with a listed person whose name has several words.

A match is a prompt to review, not proof. No match is not a clearance.

Measurement of 26 September 2026, threshold 88

  • 0 of 500real German company names from the public LEI register (GLEIF) triggered a match. These names were not used while tuning the rules.
  • 0 of 200made-up, typical names of small German companies (for example “Kaya Transporte GmbH”) triggered a match.
  • 98 of 100altered names from the EU list were recognised (swapped order, missing letter, German transliteration, different legal form). The two missed ones had the error in a short part of the name (Abdul, Khalil).

We have not yet measured English, Slovak or other non-German company names separately. The example list on this page has 16 names and gives exactly 2 matches, both with names that really are on the EU list.

What we do not recognise: typos in short words, very different transliterations (Mohammed and Muhammad are not treated as the same), names only in Arabic or Chinese script, aliases that are not on the list.

What is checked and what is not.

Checked is only the consolidated list of persons, groups and entities subject to EU financial sanctions (asset freezes), from the European Commission’s Financial Sanctions Files. You see the exact version of the file above and in the result. Only the Official Journal of the EU is authoritative; the file may lag behind it.

Not checked:

  • the UN Security Council sanctions list itself (listings the EU has adopted are in the EU list),
  • OFAC (USA), OFSI (United Kingdom) and SECO (Switzerland),
  • sectoral restrictions, for example under Regulation (EU) No 833/2014, nor export controls, embargoes and goods lists,
  • addresses, dates of birth, registration numbers and vessels.

The free official FiSaLis search (IT.NRW, Germany) searches the same EU list, one name per search: finanz-sanktionsliste.de.

Common questions.

Is this legal advice?

No. The tool compares names. It does not replace your own check or legal advice and does not say that you have met your obligations.

Is my file sent anywhere?

No. The file is read and checked in your browser. Apart from the page itself, the browser only loads the EU list from us (about 2 MB, about 420 kB compressed). We count anonymously only that a check took place and roughly how many rows and matches there were, without cookies (Umami on our own server).

What should I do if there is a match?

Compare the entry with your own records: legal form, registered office, registration number, and for persons the date of birth. Open the legal act with the link in the result. If the match is confirmed, contact the competent authority; the European Commission publishes a list of national competent authorities.

How up to date is the list?

As up to date as the file named above, with its date and SHA-256 checksum. The Commission publishes new files after changes; on this page the file is not yet refreshed automatically.

My Excel file will not open.

Supported are .xlsx and .csv. Save old .xls files in Excel with “Save As” as .xlsx or “CSV UTF-8”. The first sheet is read.
