Shopify products not showing in ChatGPT: the Shopify Catalog requirements to check first
ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot get Shopify products through Shopify Catalog, and through the catalog they can show a store's products only when the store is eligible for it; AI channels can also find products in other ways, such as web crawling and indexing. So when a product never turns up in an AI shopping answer, start with the catalog, not with robots.txt. Shopify asks for a title, at least one image, a price above zero, publication to the online store with a product URL, no Unlisted status and no hiding from search engines. Your plan and the standing of your account count too, and Shopify reviews eligibility over time. This note shows where your admin tells you the store's status, which product requirements you can check yourself, which conditions Shopify decides on its own, and what robots.txt does and does not change. Meeting every requirement you can see is not a promise: Shopify also classifies your products itself, and an AI assistant weighs factors of its own.
Start in your admin: Sales channels, then Agentic
Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and look next to Sources > Shopify Catalog. An eligible store sees the number of its products that are in Shopify Catalog, and clicking the number offers a link to review the product data mapping. An ineligible store sees an Ineligible warning and has no products in the catalog at all; click Ineligible to read the reason.
The reasons Shopify lists include a plan without catalog access, a password-protected storefront, a store that only serves B2B customers, a store still in development mode, unmet requirements, and an account that doesn't yet meet the standing requirements. If your store is eligible but the number is lower than the products you sell, check the missing products against the requirements below, and keep in mind that Shopify also classifies each product itself.
The product requirements you can check yourself
These are the conditions Shopify lists for each product:
- A title and at least 1 product image.
- A price greater than 0; free products are not included.
- Published to the online store, Hydrogen or Headless channels, with an identifiable product URL.
- No Unlisted status, and not hidden from search engines, for example with the seo.hidden metafield.
- No sensitive content, such as mature content, and no category that isn't allowed in the catalog.
The hidden ones are the easiest to miss. A product with seo.hidden still opens from its URL and still appears in your collections and product recommendations, so the storefront looks normal, yet Shopify's own comparison lists it as hidden from Shopify Catalog.
What Shopify decides, not you
Shopify classifies every product, and the classification is based on your product information, so it can differ from the category you set in your admin. Products it puts into excluded categories, such as alcohol, tobacco and vaping products, weapons, fireworks, event tickets, services and product add-ons, or Uncategorized, stay out of the catalog. Complete and accurate product information helps Shopify classify a product correctly, and Shopify can change the list of excluded categories at its discretion.
The account counts as well. Shopify reviews account standing, store activity and policy compliance over time, and a store can lose eligibility when it no longer meets the requirements. None of this shows on a product page, so no outside check can confirm catalog eligibility for you.
robots.txt does not decide Shopify Catalog
Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt or at the network layer affects only discovery on the open web; it does not stop Shopify Catalog from sending your product data to the agentic storefronts you have activated. The catalog requirements do not mention robots.txt at all.
In our study of 113 stores that Shopify features as examples, none of the robots.txt files kept OAI-SearchBot away from the product pages we sampled. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to show websites in ChatGPT's search features, separately from GPTBot, which concerns training. If you want your products out of ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot on purpose, Shopify lets you remove their Shopify Catalog access, although they might still be found by other means.
What helps once a product qualifies
Shopify includes products that meet its requirements by default and says that detailed product information can increase the chances of appearing in AI search results, while other factors specific to each AI agent or platform also play a part. The details it names include the title, the description, images, Type, Vendor, Collections and Tags, the barcode and variant option names. In our study, 43.4% of the stores left the product type empty on at least one sampled product.
Frequently asked questions
If my products meet the Shopify Catalog requirements, will ChatGPT show them?
Not necessarily. Shopify includes products that meet its requirements by default, but it also reviews your account's standing over time and classifies your products itself. Even inside the catalog, which products an AI assistant shows for a question depends on factors specific to that agent or platform.
Can I see how many of my products are in Shopify Catalog?
Yes, for an eligible store: the number is shown next to Sources > Shopify Catalog in Sales channels > Agentic, with a link to review the product data mapping. An ineligible store has no products in the catalog and sees the reason after clicking Ineligible.
Should I unblock every AI crawler in robots.txt?
Not for Shopify Catalog: crawler rules change only open-web discovery, not what Shopify Catalog sends to the agentic storefronts you activated. For ChatGPT search on the open web, OpenAI treats OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot separately, so you can allow the search crawler and still disallow the training crawler.
Check your store's public data for free
Our free public check reads what any visitor can read from your store, with no install and no e-mail: robots.txt, the home page, up to 20 products from your public product export, up to 3 product pages, and your policy and contact pages. On the topics of this note, it tells you when a sampled product page declares noindex and names up to 5 sampled products without a product type. It cannot see your admin, so catalog eligibility, categories and metafields stay outside it. Our Shopify app, Agentic Product Check, reads every active and unlisted product from the admin, but it is waiting for Shopify App Store approval and cannot be installed yet.
