Empty product type in Shopify: why it matters for AI shopping and how to fill it in bulk

Product type is the free-text field called Type in the Product organization section of a Shopify product, separate from the standard product category, and Shopify does not require it. It still matters for AI shopping: Shopify names Type, together with Vendor, Collections and Tags, among the product details that AI platforms and shopping sites consider. In our study of 113 stores that Shopify features as examples, 49 stores (43.4%) had at least one sampled product without a product type, and 390 of the 2,098 sampled products (18.6%) had none. Vendor, by contrast, was filled in on every sampled product. This note explains how the type differs from the category, how to find the products without one, and how to fill them in with Shopify's bulk editor. A filled type is not a Shopify Catalog requirement, and it does not promise a place in any AI answer.

Product type is not the product category

Each product can have one product category and one product type. The category comes from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, for example Home & Garden > Linens & Bedding > Bedding > Bed Sheets; the product type is your own label for a custom category, such as Colorful linens. Shopify recommends the standard categories and suggests a product type especially when a product doesn't align with a standard category.

For Shopify Catalog, Shopify classifies each product itself from your product information, and that classification can differ from the category you set; products it classifies as Uncategorized stay out of the catalog. In your admin, a product with no category assigned is saved as uncategorized, so it is worth setting one. Product type is not on the list of catalog requirements, but Shopify says that complete and accurate product information helps it classify products correctly.

An empty product type was the third most common gap among the 27 rules of the check, after a structured return policy and structured shipping details in product page markup. The stores are showcase brands that Shopify chose, not a random sample, and the check reads at most 20 products per store, so the numbers describe these stores, not all Shopify stores.

Find the products without a type

The bulk editor shows the type of every selected product in one column: select the products, click Bulk edit and, if the column is missing, add Product type under Columns. An empty cell in that column is a product without a type. To select every product in the store, tick the box at the top of the product list and then Select all 50+ items from your store.

In the product list itself you can sort by product type, A to Z or Z to A, and the Types filter shows the products of one type. Settle on one spelling before you start, so that the Types filter shows all products of a type together.

Fill in the type for many products at once

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products.
  2. Select the products: one by one, the whole page with the box at the top of the list, or every product with Select all 50+ items from your store.
  3. Click Bulk edit.
  4. If the Product type column is missing, click Columns and select Product type.
  5. Type the product type for each product; for a type that doesn't exist yet, click + Add.
  6. Click Save.

For one product, enter the type in the Type field of the Product organization section and save. Product types can also be imported and edited in a product CSV file.

Frequently asked questions

Is product type required for Shopify Catalog?

No. Shopify's catalog requirements ask for a title, at least one image, a price above zero, publication with a product URL, a product that is not Unlisted or hidden from search engines, and no sensitive content or excluded category. Meeting them is not a promise of a place in the catalog either: Shopify also reviews the store's eligibility, such as the plan and account standing, and classifies each product itself. Shopify lists the type among the product details that AI platforms consider, and it says such optimization can increase the chances of appearing in AI search results, not guarantee them.

Should the product type repeat the category?

It doesn't have to. The category comes from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, while the type is your own label for a custom category, and Shopify suggests it especially where a product doesn't align with a standard category.

Does the free public check see my product type?

Yes, from the outside: it reads the product type of up to 20 products in your public product export and names up to 5 of the products without one. It cannot see your categories.

See the gaps in your own store

Our free public check needs no install and no e-mail; it reads up to 20 products from your public product export and up to 3 product pages, and shows each gap, the product type included, with the number of affected products. Our Shopify app, Agentic Product Check, checks the product type of every active and unlisted product from the admin, but it is waiting for Shopify App Store approval and cannot be installed yet.
