  • No game master. Whoever hosts plays a role too and does not know the solution beforehand.
  • Nothing to memorize. In each round, everyone reads from their booklet or tells it in their own words.
  • Everything in one PDF, in two paper sizes. Invitations, role booklets, clue cards, a plan of the club, menu suggestions, tips for decorations, costumes and music, and the solution, as A4 (78 pages) and as US Letter (78 pages).

How the evening works.

A murder mystery dinner at home in four steps: three rounds over dinner, the host plays along, and nobody has to act.

  1. Invite. Once the date is set, send the general invitation. About a week before, each guest gets the invitation for their role, with a few lines about the character and a costume tip, by e-mail or printed.
  2. Arrive. On the night, you read the introduction aloud, about ten minutes: Chicago 1927, the club, the guests and the dead man. The plan of the club goes in the middle of the table.
  3. Three rounds over dinner. With the appetizer, the main course and dessert, everyone opens the next part of their booklet and gives their statement. Then the clue cards for the round go on the table, and everyone questions everyone.
  4. Accusation and solution. After the third round, everyone writes down in silence who did it, how and why. Then the host opens the envelope with the solution and reads it aloud.

Whoever hosts plays a role too and does not know the solution beforehand. If the table gets stuck, three hints wait in the “Help” envelope; you open them one at a time, in order.

For 6, 7 or 8 guests.

Six roles are always in play; with fewer than six people the game does not work. Roles 7 and 8 are extras: they join only when that many guests are at the table.

  • Murder mystery party for 6 guests

The six main roles play. Leave out the role booklets and cards marked “only with 7 or 8 guests” or “only with 8 guests”; nothing else changes. A character nobody plays simply did not come tonight.

  • Murder mystery party for 7 guests

Constance Whitlock joins, with her own motive, her own secret and her own clue cards (marked “only with 7 or 8 guests”). Anything marked “only with 8 guests” stays out.

  • Murder mystery party for 8 guests

Constance Whitlock and Otis Blackwood join, each with their own motive, secret and clue cards (marked “only with 7 or 8 guests” and “only with 8 guests”).

Anyone can play any role, whatever their gender; the character stays as written. If you like, use the second name from the role booklet, for example Henry instead of Henrietta.

Eight roles, each with a costume tip.

What everyone knows about the characters is here. What each one hides is only in their own booklet. The mob stays in the background of the story: there is no gangster role; you play the people of the club and its guests.

  • Henrietta “Hetty” NorrlundManager and partner of the club

The soul of the club: knows every guest by name and never forgets a debt.

Costume: a black dress with glass beads, a man’s jacket over the shoulders.

  • Clement “Clem” WexleyThe club’s pianist

Plays faster than he talks, and he talks a lot.

Costume: a striped suit, a bow tie, a straw boater, sheet music under the arm.

  • Opal JessopSinger, “the Nightingale of the Juniper”

The voice that made it impossible to get a table on Saturdays.

Costume: a silver sequined dress, a headband with feathers, long gloves.

  • Ignatius “Iggy” ThornburyStreet photographer (“Your picture in five minutes”)

Takes a picture of anyone who doesn’t hide in time.

Costume: a vest with sleeve garters, a newsboy cap, a camera or a cardboard box as a camera.

  • Winifred “Winnie” DombrowskiHat-check and cigarette girl

Knows who smokes how much and who goes home with whom.

Costume: a short dress, a cigarette tray on a strap, a little pillbox cap.

  • Mortimer FenwickThe owner’s bookkeeper for eleven years

A quiet man whose books are in the black and whose sleeve protectors are white.

Costume: a gray three-piece suit, glasses, sleeve protectors, a thick ledger.

  • Constance WhitlockWidow of the owner’s former partneronly with 7 or 8 guests

A lady who came in pearls that are no longer real.

Costume: a pearl necklace (costume jewelry is fine), a faux fur stole, fine gloves.

  • Otis BlackwoodTraveling salesman of refrigeratorsonly with 8 guests

Sells refrigerators and knows a suspicious amount about gin.

Costume: a fedora, an overcoat, a sample case with a catalog.

A murder mystery party for New Year’s Eve.

At Club Juniper the police arrive at midnight, which suits New Year’s Eve: by our estimate of 3 to 3.5 hours, if you start around 8:30 p.m., you reach the solution between about 11:30 p.m. and midnight. A meal that keeps everyone at the table works best, such as a fondue or a buffet set out before the first round.

Dress code: 1920s evening wear, so sequins, bow ties and feathers. For the toast, the PDF also has an alcohol-free “Juniper Fizz.”

A murder mystery party for Christmas.

A holiday dinner often has three courses, and the game has three rounds: with the appetizer, the main course and dessert. That makes it a fit for an evening between Christmas and New Year’s with friends or family, recommended for ages 16 and up.

As a gift: buy the PDF, print the general invitation and put it under the tree. The game is not made for an office party of 20 or more; it is for 6 to 8 people.

Before you buy.

How long does the murder mystery dinner take?

About 3 to 3.5 hours with dinner, our estimate. The number comes from our schedule for the evening (introduction, three rounds over three courses, accusation and solution), not from a timed game: the game is new, and your table may be faster or slower. For preparation with printing, allow about 1 to 2 hours, also an estimate.

What do I need to prepare?

Print the PDF on A4 or US Letter paper; black and white is fine. Print the beginning of each role booklet double-sided, each round single-sided so you can fold and seal it, and the cards single-sided to cut out. The cards for each round go into an envelope, the three hints into the “Help” envelope and the solution into one of its own; templates for the envelopes are included. Send the general invitation as soon as the date is set, and the role invitations about a week before. The menu suggestions can be prepared the day before or in the afternoon, so on the night all that is left is plating, warming up and pouring. Nobody has to memorize anything.

Which file do I print, A4 or US Letter?

Both are included in the price, with the same content. In the United States and Canada, US Letter (8.5 x 11 in) fits the paper in your printer; most other countries use A4 (210 x 297 mm).
