October 1964. During a power cut at a private view in a country house, someone took a painting out of its frame and hung a copy in its place. Six guests had the chance. The auctioneer, Mr Hugo Crane, has sent you everything he knows. Work out who swapped the painting, how the original left the house, and why.

You print it at home, with no cutting, and solve it alone, as a couple or with friends around a table.

The Ashgrove Heron, printable mystery case file for teens and adults. Real pages laid on a desk: Mr Crane's letter, the auction catalogue with Lot 27 and the timeline of Friday evening.

Pieces from the case file: the heron painting in its frame, a moonlit photograph, a railway ticket, the Wendham Courier cutting, the back of the canvas and a sealed envelope.
How to play in four steps: read the file, study the plan, fill in the logic grid, open the envelope with the hints, the sealed letter and the solution.
All 21 pages of the case file in one picture. The clue text is hidden and the envelope pages are blurred.
What you need and how long it takes: a home printer, pencils, an eraser and an envelope; about 45 to 90 minutes for 1 to 6 players, age 14 and up.

Details

How you solve it

Put pages 19 to 21 in an envelope before you start. Read the file: a timeline, witness statements, a cloakroom ledger and period papers. Match a photograph to the floor plan, decode a dealer's price code and check the train times. Then fill in the logic grid (guests, rooms, items and times) until one guest is left in the Long Gallery at 9:12. Stuck? The hints come in three levels, from a nudge to the full step.

The fair play rule

Every statement and document in the file is true. The guilty guest did not lie; they simply did not tell the whole story.

One answer, checked by a program

A computer solver confirmed that the logic grid has exactly one answer and that all 14 pieces of evidence are needed to reach it. No group has timed it at a real table yet, so the playing time below is our estimate.

Who it is for

Age 14 and up. It suits people who like logic grid puzzles and classic whodunits. 1 to 6 players: alone, read everything and then fill in the grid; in a team, share out the documents, read them aloud and sum them up for each other. About 45 to 90 minutes (alone, allow about an hour), plus about 10 minutes to print and get ready. It is a case file you read and reason through, not an escape room.

A gentle mystery

Nobody is hurt: the crime is a theft, and the painting is safe and unharmed. All people, places and firms are invented.

You need

A printer, plain paper, pencils, an eraser and an envelope. No scissors. Print one-sided at 100% (actual size); black and white is fine.

Good to know
