The 20 pictures
Pumpkin, bat, wrapped candy, spider, black cat, autumn leaf, star, owl, jack-o'-lantern, candy corn, sitting cat, candle, lantern, moon and bat, hot cocoa, apple, acorn, mushroom, maple leaf and sunflower. No witches, ghosts or skulls.
How the pages work
Letters run along the bottom (and again along the top), numbers up the side (and again on the right), with 1 at the bottom. The squares in each list are in order, all the A squares first, then B, and so on, so children can tick them off as they go. Each page has a line for a name and a line to write what the picture is.
Checked by a script
A script read the square lists back out of both finished PDF files and rebuilt every picture: all 20 match the answer keys square for square, with no square listed twice.
Who it is for
Our suggestion is grades 2 to 4, or younger children with a grown-up. The squares use a letter and a number, like a map grid; there is no plotting of x and y points on axes. It practises reading grid references and careful checking. It is not written to any particular curriculum or standard.
